This course shows the learner how technological innovations are utilized in healthcare, while providing an overview of a range of digital health and artificial intelligence technologies available to support patient assessment, diagnosis, or treatment or ways in which individuals can employ technology for self-management and self-care. It also demonstrates a variety of approaches nurses use to deliver virtual forms of care and when educating learners across a range of settings.

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After participating in this course, learners will be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of technology for collecting, managing and sharing health data to inform clinical decision making and care delivery
  • Understand the dimensions of data quality and the importance of data standards in computerized systems that support patient care and population health
  • Identify the ways in which evidence-based technological innovations shape patient self-management and the limitations and risks of this approach
  • Evaluate the role of nurses in applying technological innovations when delivering evidence-based healthcare and education.

AUTHOR BIOGRAPHIES

Siobhan O'Connor, PhD, BSc
Dr Siobhán O'Connor is a Senior Lecturer in the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care at King's College London. She also holds an Adjunct Associate Professorship at Western University, Canada and is a Liaison to the United Nations (UN) for Sigma Nursing. Dr O'Connor has a multidisciplinary background with bachelor degrees in nursing and information systems, completing her PhD in health informatics, and has nearly 20 years combined experience in industry, clinical practice, and higher education. She also served as an external advisor on the World Health Organization (WHO) State of the World's Nursing report 2025 providing recommendations on digital nursing education and practice. Her research focuses on co-designing, implementing and evaluating technologies in healthcare such as health apps to support patient self-management. She also leads the AI Nurses Network a clinical research network on artificial intelligence in nursing.

Mengying Zhang, PhD
Dr. Mengying Zhang is a Research Associate in the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care at King’s College London. She has a multidisciplinary background with bachelor's degrees in both nursing and and finance. She completed her undergraduate study and became a registered nurse in China in 2018 and gained MSc (Advanced Nursing Practice) and PhD degree at the University of Edinburgh in 2024.

Mengying's research interests mainly focus on the development and evaluation of digital interventions to improve quality of life of the public. She joined King's College London in 2024 and continued working on digital health projects, including the design and development of an online co-design toolkit, AI Nurse Networks, and AI ethical issues.
