Globally, nurses are being called upon to advocate for health equity. At the United Nations (UN), Sigma works to advance health equity through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Join Sigma's UN representatives for ideas on local actions and global efforts that nurses can engage in to build a healthier world.

This course will retire after 21st October 2024.

Learning Outcomes

After participating in this course, learners will be able to:

  • At the end of the presentation, learners will be able to self-report two ways to apply advocacy skills for improvement of conversations about health.
  • At the end of the presentation, learns will self-report an increased knowledge of the nurses’ role in advocacy both locally and globally.

Speaker Bios:

Valerie Ann Clary-Muronda, PhD, RNC-OB
Dr. Clary-Muronda is an assistant professor at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and a Sigma Liaison to the United Nations. She is a strong advocate for maternal and newborn health rights. Dr. Clary-Muronda seeks to improve the visibility and participation of nurses in UN efforts targeting global health disparities. Dr. Clary-Muronda coordinates a high school enrichment program for students aspiring to become nurses and serves as a member of the NJ Board of Nursing.

Pennie Sessler Branden, PhD, CNM, CNE, RN
Her love of maternal child health and the rights for healthcare by all women have always guided her decisions regarding what she does in nursing and midwifery. Dr. Sessler Branden’s experience includes clinical excellence, leadership, advocacy, and education nationally and globally, for which she has received numerous awards. Dr. Sessler Branden has always loved and continues to contribute to nursing and healthcare in whatever form that takes.

Janice E. Hawkins, PhD, RN
Janice Hawkins is a Clinical Associate Professor at Old Dominion University where she serves as Director for the Nurse Executive DNP concentration as well as Director of Community and Global Initiatives. Dr. Hawkins is Sigma's most recently appointed UN Liaison. She is also a State Leader for the UN Foundation Shot@Life Campaign. Her travels all over the world have led to a greater awareness of global health challenges. She can be reached at jhawkins@odu.edu

Dania Itani Mousa, BSN, RN, CMSRN
Dania Itani Mousa is registered nurse and DNP-FNP student in Los Angeles, CA. She is also Sigma's UN Youth Representative. Dania is a global advocate for youth and empowerment of early career nurses. She is pursuing excellence in nursing practice through advocacy & leadership.
